Australia has become an intellectual desert. To find a caring, visionary, wise major party politician we probably have to go back to Barry Owen Jones (1983-90).
Richard Giza (age:59) and Joseph Vella (age:65) are living proof of the blatant disregard our politicians have for the future of Australian research and technology - let alone our unemployed nation. Where is the 'Lucky Country' now?
CANBERRA RECOILS FROM RESPONSIBILITY TO CARE FOR 'OTHER' AUSTRALIA
Richard Giza is CEO of Recoilless Technologies International Ltd. With dual Polish/Australian citizenship, he has been treated inhumanely by any measure. Spurned by Australia's grandma-selling Canberra industry bureaucracy, Mr Giza has recently been rejected for a poverty allowance (ironically called 'Newstart') by Centrelink. This is despite showing over 250 pages of documents to the Springvale (Melbourne) office. Indeed he was told a new batch of documents had to be presented as it was outside some 3-month limit.
Papers included medical certificates from long-time GP Dr Janaw specifying current or previous health issues including cancer, spine and blood pressure. His four or so visits to Springvale Centrelink, sometimes with Maltese-Australian business partner Joseph Vella, resulted in justice being denied. The problem - both were still directors of Recoilless Technologies (at least on paper and the Web). The pair were told by a supervisor - of Asian appearance - to go hang themselves (to relieve their hunger).
The men made their first trip to Centrelink in October 2012 after their factory and equipment had been seized by Hayes Lawyers. The final visit, on April 18 2013, climaxed in the supervisor calling Springvale police on the pair. It was then that Mr Giza was determined to enter a Hunger Strike - and die if need be.
Mr Giza was, and on paper still is, CEO of a significant, promising technology developer for over a decade. The company had dependable contracts - with the Polish military! Based in Keysborough, Recoilless Technologies International Ltd. had about 700 investors. A Stock Exchange listing was in sight.
Then, in 2011 and 2012, funds dried up. Canberra was no longer interested in assisting promising home-grown technology. Mr Giza highlights the indifference of supposedly pro-business AusIndustry. So the factory and equipment was shut down by Hayes Lawyers. Now he and especially Vella are reduced to poverty, nervous exhaustion and depression. Vella is even more ashamed to rely on charity. They were astounded by the hostile attitude of Centrelink and its refusal to provide services (except for a list of local charities).
Having spent $11 million over 12 years developing non-rebounding military, mining, and vehicle technology and employing over 20 staff, even the Centrelink security net had dismally failed Richard Giza and Joseph Vella.
Next to what seemed a pile of unattended luggage and tarpaulin on the footpath in front of Victorian Parliament House, an emaciated Richard Giza related the lengthy and very unAustralian personal drama. That day, Protective Services had moved his tent and belongings completely off the expansive Parliament steps where he'd been on a Hunger Strike for18 of 31 days. Seated alonside sleeping bag on the hot Melbourne footpath, it was now the turn of the City of Melbourne and Lord Mayor Robert Doyle to crush democratic dissent. Two employees presented Richard with an eviction notice. It was signed by Peter Joynson, Authorised Officer. Melbourne Council had issued several decrees to leave. Later, two Salvation Army representatives came to pick up his goods and chattels and take them somewhere.
(When asked if Melbourne Council had called the 'Army', one quietly agreed. But our gutsy Melbourne Hunger Striker was determined to stay - even on a dreaded 43 C degree (109 F) day!

Will the hunger striker be there tomorrow? All three forms of Australian government hope not. They hope he disappears into the Great Australian Centrelink queue.
